'El Duque' Update
El Duque won again. How great is that? Well, the numbers are a bit of good, a bit of bad. His ERA was 5.40 for the game, his WHIP was 2.00; and that's scary given that he only went 5 innings. however he did strike out 9 (gasp!) and only walked 1, which is the kind of pitcher one likes.

``It was a high-wire act for sure. He pitched carefully,'' Yankees manager Joe Torre said. ``We were going to send him back out for the sixth but it was a long inning.''

After spending all last year on the disabled list, Hernandez has 33 strikeouts in 24 innings over five starts. But he left his start Tuesday at Toronto with a tight left hamstring and had thrown 104 pitches Sunday, and Torre didn't want to risk sending him out for the sixth.

El Duque allowed nine hits and one walk. He gave up Melvin Mora's 16th
homer in the third, a two-out, run scoring single to Brian Roberts in the
fourth and Rafael Palmeiro's 14th homer in the fifth.

``When you're working you don't think about time, you just think about outs,'' Hernandez said of the game, which lasted 3 hours, 47 minutes. ``I just need to strengthen my arm a little more and get to 120-125 pitches like I used to.''

I'm a believer. :)
In other news, the other Cuban ace Jose Contreras who has contributed nothing but crap to my fantasy team was traded to the White Sox for Esteban Loaiza. Now Loaiza pitched really well last year, almost snaring the AL Cy Young Award, but he simply isn't doing as well this year, reverting to more dismal career norms.
