Coming Into His Own

Melky Time Paying Off

Don't look now, but Melky Cabrera's OPS topped .800 as of yesterday. Melky Cabrera went 4-for-5 yesterday with a double and a triple. So the power stroke maybe starting to show. As a result of yesterday's blinder, he is now sitting on .328/.406/.410. in 61 at-bats. He's also drawn 8 walks in the 18 games but is yet to homer.

It's also a good sign that he's starting to hit these doubles. As of May 22 he's had a double every three games and yesterday he slipped in that triple. If he can go the rest of the season hitting like that, I can't think of a manager who wouldn't take him. On top of that, Torre has audaciously started him as lead-off hitter in place of Johnny Damon when Damon has been resting, and that seems to have sparked his hitting.

Still, it's small sample size. We don't know how he'll respond when he hits that inevitable slump. But I think his slump was when he was just hitting singles, adjusting to the league. We'll see. But just I was happy with Cano last year, so far I'm pretty happy with Melky this year.

The other observation to be made based on the recent successes of Cano, Wang and hopefully Cabrera, is that the Yankees systems seem to be getting a lot out of their Latin American and International scouts.
