Now we are cooking. We are not only going into space as a private venture to win a prize but we are commercialising it! Now that the tech is there Richard Branson (who else) is going to commercailise what has been learned on Spaceship One.

YAY! This is a very important step. NASA will have to get some ambition & look further outward soon or face becomming even more redundant. I may yet get into space in my lifetime & may even see some significant Mars trips. I am really happy about this.

In defence of NASA, they have the hard job of being responsible for US space direction in all aspects. So with commercial space flights, there is no longer a need for NASA to provide these, but what about other tasks?

NASA needs to concentrate on the Moon, lest China's access becomes unfettered. Nasa needs to concentrate on Mars, lest European access becomes unfettered. Nasa needs to concentrate on the Solar System while it still has a monopoly on such research and NASA needs to concentrate on research outside the Heliosphere.

NASA tries to fulfill all of its obligations, including the Democrat need to look like they are economically responsible. The truth is, the US will go down in history for its early space exploits, just as ancient Egypt is remembered for its pyramids and China for its wall. But there is only so much one orgaisation can do. As the Democrats have found, it easy to push the lever of mediocrity.

How SpaceShipOne winning the Ansari X Prize can be turned into a diatribe about the evils f the US Democrats kind of escapes me. :)
- It's certainly interesting, but also, it's most certainly weird. :)
